PORTFOLIO SENSES

This collection of work was created and collected by Samuel Bannister

Taste

This Image is my favorite as it adheres to the composition rule of three, the three candles stick out in the middle and add to the aesthetic of the cake. The lighting used is studio from both sides, left and right for balance, and the candles add another light sauce which illuminates the top of the cake in a soft orange. I cut out a square from the bottom of cakes box to add a plate to the bottom, making the image look more set up. I did not use the secondary image as the lighting and angle of the shot are not fixed. To edit this photo I will make the background darker to make the cake stand out and be the subject of the photo, edit both sides to not include the infinity curve and crop to make both sides the same amount of space

Smell

I like this image as it focuses the bottle with a ray of light, this lighting adds to the atmosphere and tone of the image, making it look like a perfume ad. To set up the shot I used an orange infinity curve as it contrasted the pink of the packaging and set the bottle on top of the box to add depth, I used a controlled studio light to get the stream of light. If I were to retake this shoot I would make the shadow fully in frame, have the box line straight across, instead of skewed, have to box the other way around so that the text was not in frame and make sure the glass of the bottle did not have a light glint. To edit this shoot I will make the cut of light more prominent and defined and I will skew the box so its more straight and in line.

Touch

This photo show the sense of touch through pain, that can only be felt with the sensation of feeling. To set this shot up I used Glue, blue roll and red and black acrylic paint to create the wound. The blue roll was applied using the glue to the arm creating texture and a base for the pain, a mix of the black and shades of red created the rest of the effect. The rest of the shot was set up with another model applying bandage to the wound and having the shot In front of a black background, allowing the models clothes to blend into the background . If I were to retake this shot I would include more of the hands within the frame. For editing I will use the saturation tool and the crop tool to make parts of the model darker and less saturated, making a heavier focus on the subject.

Sight

I have chosen to focus on these as my main photos. I set up these shots by using a mirror facing the glasses and an infinity curve at the opposite end, this gives the impression of the item being within an area with no corners. The curve faced away from the mirror so the reflections were within the white space. I used my glasses as the subject as they are a direct symbol of vision and the reflections are another aspect adding to the theme of sight. I chose this photo over the other ones as I like the portrait framing, I also like the angle its taken from and the angle the glasses are in To edit this image I will desaturate the photo to make it black and white and crop the bottom area to decrease blank space within the photo.

Sound

These are the Photos I have chosen to use for the sound photo shoot, the idea was to capture the distinct and awful sound of nails on a chalk board in an image. I used the chalk board I had at home and zoomed in, not see the edges I added the scratch lines and the list name as I believe they make the image easier to recognize as a chalk board . I used a tripod and a ten second timer as I had to capture my own hand in frame. I like the lines of chalk as they give the illusion of movement within the image, and that movement is what produces the sound. My second favorite image was the photo using long exposure as it also shows movement in a more unique way, however I did not use it as I believe the main image is closer to the representation of the sense.
